Planning
What pages does a small-business website actually need?
More pages do not automatically make a better website. Every page should help a visitor understand the business, trust it or take action.
The minimum useful structure
Many straightforward businesses can start with one strong scrolling page. Businesses with several distinct services usually benefit from separate pages so customers and search engines can understand each offer clearly.
- Home
- Services
- About or trust section
- Reviews or proof
- Contact or quote request
When a service deserves its own page
Give a service its own page when the customer has different questions, the service targets a different search, or the call to action changes.
A plumber may need separate pages for drains, water heaters and emergency service. A simple consultant with one core offer may not.
Do not create pages just to look bigger
Thin pages with repeated text make a site harder to use and harder to maintain. A smaller website with clear decisions is usually more useful than a large website full of filler.
Build around the customer's path
A visitor should be able to answer three questions quickly: What do you do? Why should I trust you? What should I do next? The page structure exists to make those answers easy.
